CG Playlists: Sleep

CG Playlists

Every week, I’ll compile a few of my favorite songs, and try to adhere to a theme. Tonight’s is one of my favorites: sleep music. I know most people prefer to sleep in complete silence, but I absolutely cannot. I needs me some noise. Usually it’s ESPN or something, but I do like to put on some relaxing music to help myself get in the mood. Here are ten tracks that I have in my iTunes “sleep” list. As with any playlist, order is important! Check them out in a playlist here or individually below.

A Tribe Called Quest – “Stir It Up (Steve Biko)”

Rap music doesn’t generally lull people to sleep, but there’s something about “Steve Biko” that always works for me. Not saying it’s boring, none of these songs are, but it’s got a sluggish, relaxed quality to it.

Kraftwerk – “Neon Lights”

It’s long, but it’s a really beautiful song. The percussion reminds me of a clock ticking, which in turn reminds me of hypnotism.

U2 – “An Cat Dubh/Into The Heart”

A less-popular U2 song from their first album, “An Cat Dubh” is also very long. Reminds me of a lullaby or something. Speaking of which…

The Cure – “Lullaby”

It’s kind of creepy, yes, but it’s a very pleasant song about spiders or something. Please don’t watch the video. Please.

Gorillaz – “12D3″

Much simpler than the average Gorillaz song, “12D3″ is pretty sparse: just a guitar, some synths, and 2D. Very calming.

Q Lazzarus – “Goodbye Horses”

People get freaked out when I tell them that “Goodbye Horses” is my favorite song ever, but it is.

Grizzly Bear – “Knife”

I haven’t been following Grizzly Bear all that much lately, but I have fond memories of falling asleep to “Knife.”

Shadez of Brooklyn – “Change”

You can probably guess what “Change” is about, but don’t pay too much attention to the words. Just listen to the beat.

Candy Claws – “Lantern Fish”

Sleep music is pretty much what Candy Claws do. This is one of my favorites.

The Field – “Then It’s White”

Such a beautiful, melancholy song. And it’s instrumental, which is a plus when you’re trying to relax.
