Go-to Karaoke Song
Today’s Dilemma: what’s your go-to karaoke song.
Eventually, over the course of a year, you’re going to find yourself at a karaoke bar. Whether you enjoy them and seek them out, or your friends drag you to one, you’re going to also find yourself standing on stage. Like anything, it’s important to be prepared.
Matt: I am one of those people who prefer to listen to my music, not sing it. Still, the only thing worse than being the drunk guy doing karaoke on stage is the drunk guy sitting at the table watching his friends perform, because he was too embarrassed. If I had to choose, I’d probably go with Train’s “Meet Virginia.” It’s a throwback, recognizable, but not as predictable as something like “Piano Man.” It’s also a great song–one of my favorites from the 90′s. If I have to sing, it’ll probably be that song.
Laura: I once made the mistake of singing ‘American Pie’ at a karaoke bar in Portugal. Never again. It was a painful experience for everyone involved. That song is just too damn long. More recently chose to I sing LFO’s classic ‘Summer Girls,’ which was super fun. I’m not really big on karaoke, but I’ve been told that in Korea Town they have these nifty karaoke spots where you can get your own room, bottle service, and they’ll even get you a fan so you can feel like you’re in a music video. If that’s not awesome I don’t know what is.
Craig: As a self-proclaimed karaoke bar greenhorn, I’m not sure that I’ve lived to see myself produce a really strong karaoke performance to date. With that said, I have picked up on some key points from observation. 1) Even if you truly love Creed, Fuel, or Slipknot, do everyone a favor and pick something else to sing. 2) Don’t be the group of 6 dudes who thinks it’d be funny to try a Destiny’s Child’s ballad because they know the girls all remember it. Most likely only one of you is truly into singing that song, and the rest of the disinterested choir just looks out of place on stage. 3) Know your surroundings and audience. Don’t be like me and try Garth Brooks on the NE karaoke circuit, for you too will be met with little audience acclaim, as I was. Alex: I seem to recall sitting in a karaoke bar with Matt on his birthday over the summer…he was dying to sing Billy Joel’s “Uptown Girl” (and eventually did). Jay was there too I believe. I’m a fan of A-Ha’s “Take on Me”…always fun to sing for some reason. Build Me Up Buttercup is a favorite as well.
