Is Newt Gingrich for Real?
Today’s Dilemma: Is Newt Gingrich for real?
He’s been steadily rising in the polls over the past few weeks, and now take a look at yesterday’s Rasmussen presidential poll. The national survey has Newt beating Obama 45% TO 43%. In fact, he’s listed as the only Republican beating the President.
Matt: We’ve witnessed the rise and fall of Bachmann, Perry, and now Herman Cain. In a race where Paul has had the most loyal fan base, and Romney has the most consistent, Gingrich’s surge may just put him on top for good. He appears to be the only serious challenger to Romney. Newt’s running as the only real conservative, and has even likened himself as a Reagan-esque candidate. While I am not sure how excited I am by the thought of a socially conservative in the oval office, this trait may serve as his advantage. Many have predicted that Obama may steal away independent voters from Romney if he wins the Republican candidacy, for Romney is certainly not a hardcore conservative. In fact, no one really knows what he is. The guy has flip-flopped on just about every major issue, and the country may be too impatient at this point to handle that. The idea of anything distinctly opposite of Obama could be the winning ticket. Here’s one thing that’s for sure. The guy is smart, damn smart. He’s got real experience serving as Speaker of the House. We shall see.
Jay: I was absolutely shocked to see the Newt doing so well in the polls, but then again, he knows the American political system pretty well. Matt’s right, he’s the only republican candidate that I can honestly say has a definitive opinion on any real issue, and the rest of the once promising candidates have been dropping like flies. I might even be tempted to vote for the big guy.
Alex: Gingrich isn’t for real, just as Bachmann, Perry and Cain weren’t for real. I’m convinced that the whole field is some sort of huge practical joke on America. Besides, Gingrich has way too much baggage…affairs, divorce(s), taking $2 million from Fanny Mae and Freddy Mac, the list goes on. It seems the Republicans will do anything to find a candidate who’s not Romney…and that the candidates will do just about anything to let them down…again and again.
